Help shape the future of rail in the North

We're looking for an experienced and strategic communications professional to lead communications for some of Northern's most significant transformation programmes, including our ambitious New Trains Programme.

This is a rare opportunity to play a central role in a multi-billion-pound investment that will transform train travel across the North of England for decades to come. From the arrival of new fleets and major infrastructure improvements to stakeholder engagement and colleague communications, you'll be at the heart of telling one of the biggest transport stories in the country.

What you'll be doing

As Communications Manager – Rolling Stock Programmes , you'll be the dedicated communications lead for some of Northern’s major strategic programmes, working closely with senior leaders, programme teams and external partners.

You'll develop and deliver communications strategies that inform, engage and inspire a wide range of audiences, including colleagues, customers, stakeholders, elected officials, trade unions and the media.

Your responsibilities will include:

· Leading communications for Northern's New Trains Programme and other related projects.

· Developing integrated communications plans covering internal communications, media relations, customer communications, stakeholder engagement, events and campaigns.

· Acting as a trusted adviser to directors and senior leaders, providing strategic communications counsel and reputation management support.

· Building strong relationships with programme teams, industry partners and government stakeholders.

· Ensuring colleagues, customers and communities understand how investment programmes will benefit the railway and the regions we serve.

· Identifying and managing reputational risks, providing expert advice on sensitive and complex issues.

· Delivering engagement activity that gathers insight and ensures the right people are involved at the right time.

· Supporting major announcements, launches, events and media opportunities as new trains enter service.

Why this role matters

Northern's rolling stock programme is expected to represent an investment of between £2 billion and £4 billion, with the first new trains arriving by 2030 and fleet delivery continuing through to 2034.

The decisions we make – and how we communicate them – will shape the experience of millions of customers, thousands of colleagues and communities across the North.

This role offers the chance to influence nationally significant programmes, work with senior stakeholders across government and industry, and help build confidence in the future of rail.

What we're looking for

You'll be an experienced communications professional with a strong track record of delivering strategic communications in a complex environment.

We're looking for someone who can demonstrate:

· Significant experience in communications, public relations or stakeholder engagement.

· Experience supporting major projects, programmes or organisational transformation.

· Strong media, internal communications and stakeholder management skills.

· The ability to influence, challenge and advise senior leaders with confidence and credibility.

· Experience managing communications within politically sensitive or highly regulated environments.

· Excellent judgement and the ability to navigate complex reputational issues.

· Resilience, adaptability and the ability to deliver at pace.

· Strong planning, campaign development and evaluation skills.

Qualifications

· Degree-level qualification or equivalent professional experience.

· Commitment to continuous professional development.

· Membership of a professional body such as CIPR or PRCA would be advantageous.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
