Every train that leaves our depot depends on the right parts being in the right place at the right time. As part of our Engineering team at Northern, you’d be the person who makes that happen.
Based at our TrainCare Centre, you’ll keep the wheels turning behind the scenes. From issuing calibrated instruments to managing vital train components, your work directly supports vehicle reliability and availability. It’s hands-on, practical and purposeful – and without it, our trains simply would not move.
This is your chance to play a key role in keeping millions of journeys across the North on track.
What you’ll be doing
No two days look exactly the same, but here’s what you can expect:
- Receiving, checking and issuing train parts, calibrated instruments and consumable materials
- Keeping accurate records using our SAP system – Systems, Applications and Products in Data Processing
- Storing goods safely and correctly in line with Health and Safety standards
- Carrying out regular stock checks at the TrainCare Centre
- Operating a forklift truck in a safety-critical environment to move and store materials
- Working closely with Engineering colleagues to support production and reliability targets
You’ll report to the District Stores Manager and work as part of a close-knit stores team, making sure everything is where it needs to be, exactly when it’s needed.
About you
Organisation, accuracy and reliability – that’s the foundation of this role.
You’re someone who takes pride in keeping things in order. You’re comfortable working independently, but you also enjoy being part of a team that depends on one another. When plans change, you stay calm and adapt.
Here’s what you’ll bring:
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach
- Confidence using computer systems – experience with SAP is helpful, but full training will be provided
- The ability to prioritise your workload and manage your time effectively
- Clear communication skills and a friendly, professional manner
- Flexibility to work shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
- The ability to live within 60 minutes’ drive of the TrainCare Centre
You’ll be working outdoors and around moving vehicles in a safety-critical environment, so a responsible attitude to Health and Safety is essential.
If you enjoy practical work, keeping things organised and knowing your role genuinely makes a difference, you’ll feel right at home here.

Why Northern?
We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
