IT Project Manager
Technology change doesn’t just happen – it needs driving. And that’s where you come in.
As part of our team at Northern, you’d be managing a range of IT led projects from shaping the initial brief to delivering the final result. You’ll be the one making sure everything runs to plan: the right people, the right budget, the right outcomes. If something shifts, you’ll help everyone adapt. If a risk pops up, you’ll spot it and sort it.
This role sits in our Technology team, where curiosity is valued and improvement never stands still. People come to Northern for trains they can rely on and your work will help keep that promise running.
What you’ll be doing
- Taking ownership of IT led projects across their full lifecycle
- Using structured project management methods to deliver on time, to scope and to budget
- Creating and managing clear, high-quality documentation
- Working closely with colleagues from across the business to define needs, plan delivery, and track progress
- Managing risks, changes, timelines and communications as the project develops
- Keeping stakeholders informed and engaged from start to finish
- Collaborating with third-party suppliers and internal teams to make sure solutions land smoothly and meet real business needs
About you
Communication, clarity, and a cool head under pressure – that’s three things you’ll bring to the table.
You’ll need experience managing IT based projects using recognised methodologies, and you’ll know how to balance scope, time and cost without losing sight of the bigger picture. You’re confident working with different people from suppliers to senior leaders and you’re always looking for ways to improve how things are done.
Strong attention to detail, great documentation skills, and the ability to juggle competing priorities will help you thrive here. And if you enjoy collaborating across teams to make things happen? Even better.
What’s in it for you? At Northern, we don’t just value our people - we go the extra mile to support them. Here’s a taste of what you can look forward to:

Why Northern? We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
