People come to Northern for trains they can rely on. Behind that reliability is a lot of data, and that’s where you come in.
As part of our Engineering function, you’d sit right at the centre of how we understand fleet performance. Your insights help engineers spot patterns early, reduce technical delays, and keep trains moving safely and efficiently across the North. This is a role with real visibility, where your work feeds directly into daily decisions that affect thousands of journeys.
You’ll be working closely with TrainCare Centre teams and Fleet Improvement Engineers, translating complex technical data into clear, useful insight. If you enjoy building relationships, asking the right questions, and using data to make things better, this is a chance to make a genuine impact on the railway.
What you’ll be doing
- Analysing technical incidents across the fleet to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities
- Working closely with TrainCare Centre teams and Fleet Improvement Engineers to support data-led decision making
- Producing clear, straightforward reports that turn data into practical insight
- Supporting daily performance meetings with meaningful analysis that helps tackle the root causes of delays
- Developing, maintaining, and reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs) linked to fleet performance
- Using tools such as Excel to manage documentation, track issues, and monitor trends over time
About you
Data, people, and curiosity – that’s what will set you up for success here.
You’ll bring:
- Experience analysing data and presenting insight in a way that makes sense to non-technical audiences
- Confidence building positive working relationships with engineers, managers, and other stakeholders
- A proactive approach to discussion and problem-solving, with the confidence to contribute in performance forums
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to spot patterns and trends in technical information
- Experience using data visualisation or analytics tools such as Excel, Power BI, or similar
If you enjoy being visible, collaborative, and hands-on with your analysis, you’ll feel right at home in this team.

Why Northern?
We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.
Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, after which rail quickly spread across the globe – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back on the historic events that led us here, we also look towards the future as we move into the era of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.
A place for everyone
The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.
At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.
We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
