BUSINESS FUNCTION: Engineering

GRADE: L3 Shifts

SALARY:  £45,469 per annum

ROLE TYPE: Onsite

HOURS: Average 35 per week

Every reliable train journey starts long before passengers step on board. Behind the scenes, the right parts and equipment need to be in the right place at the right time. That’s where you come in.

As a Stores assistant at our Neville Hill Train Care Centre, you’ll help keep Northern’s trains moving by making sure our engineering colleagues have the materials they need to maintain and repair our fleet. You’ll be part of a team that plays a vital role in train availability and reliability, supporting colleagues at Neville Hill, Hull and other locations across our network. It’s a hands-on role where your organisation, attention to detail and customer-focused approach will make a real difference.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll help keep our stores running smoothly, making sure materials are available, accounted for and ready when our engineering teams need them.

Here’s what that looks like day to day:

  • Receiving, checking and issuing train parts, consumables and calibrated instruments.
  • Delivering and collecting goods across our supported locations.
  • Using our SAP system to manage stock movements and maintain accurate records.
  • Making sure materials are stored safely and correctly, following health and safety requirements.
  • Carrying out regular stock checks to keep our inventory accurate.
  • Supporting colleagues across Engineering to help keep trains available and reliable.
  • Working a flexible shift pattern, including nights and weekends.

About you

You’re organised, dependable and take pride in getting the details right. You understand that great service isn’t just about helping customers directly. It’s also about giving your colleagues the tools and materials they need to do their jobs well.

You’ll bring:

  • Attention to detail: You can keep accurate records and make sure stock is where it should be.
  • A flexible, reliable approach: You’re ready to adapt to changing priorities and work shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • A customer-focused mindset: You enjoy helping people and understand the importance of getting things right first time.
  • Good communication skills: You can share information clearly and work well with colleagues.
  • Initiative: You’re comfortable organising your own workload and knowing when to ask for support.
  • A full driving licence: Essential for supporting our wider network of locations.

Experience working in a stores or warehouse environment would be useful, as would familiarity with SAP and experience operating a forklift truck. These skills will help you hit the ground running, but your attention to detail, reliability and willingness to learn are just as important.

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,650 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England, beginning a journey that would transform travel across the world. We’ve recently celebrated 200 years of the modern railway and, as we reflect on that legacy, our focus is now on the future as Great British Rail takes shape. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board.

At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong. Our talent team can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We're also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria for the role, we’ll always offer an interview.

We automate parts of our screening process to remove any unconscious bias and to make sure every application is treated fairly. All successful offers will be subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and a medical assessment.

No matter your background, experience, or whether you call it a bap, barm, or cob… there’s a place for you here in the railway.
